Map and History of Habersham County, Georgia

|
Habersham County is located in the north eastern corner of Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains where the Piedmont Plateau meets the Appalachians. It covers 283 square miles and ranges from 1,200 to 3,600 feet above sea level. Its geographic position is halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Greenville, South Carolina, or about 85 miles each way. The county is easily accessible to major population centers through a network of well maintained roads. Charming and historic villages and cities dot the scenic landscape along the 441 historic route from the county's southern end to the northeast corner. Beginning with Alto and traveling northward, the traveler experiences Baldwin and Cornelia; a short side trip east brings you to Mt. Airy. Back on 441, the next town is Demorest, then Clarkesville, the county seat. You will pass through Hollywood and Turnerville before arriving at the renowned Tallulah Gorge at Tallulah Falls. Batesville, northwest from Clarkesville on 197, is the gateway to a number of Northeast Georgia's well known recreation areas, which include Lake Burton, Black Rock Mountain State Park, Brasstown Bald, Anna Ruby Falls, Unicoi State Park, and the mountain resort of Alpine Helen. Habersham County landmarks include the Chattahoochee, Tallulah, Tugaloo, and Soque rivers; Lake Russell; and the Chattahoochee National Forest, which covers three-fourths of the county's land area. The flora in the area is some of the richest in the world. Abundant rainfall supports the luxuriant forests with their vast variety of plant species and the numerous streams and rivers, which originate in the hills and flow out onto Georgia's plains in the east and west. Thousands of people visit each year and return home with memories of clean, fresh air, sparkling streams, soothing sounds, pristine beauty and a hefty dose of wholesome southern hospitality. It is a great place to visit, and an even better place to call home. |
